The following is an except of a memoir written by Charles Howard Duffy while sailing on the “LADY JO” in the Honolulu Classic, a yacht race between San Pedro and Honolulu, Jan 1,1939.
The Honolulu Classic – Jan 1, 1939

8:00 PM.
What a Day! What a Night; We are laying in a glossy sea with hardly a breath of wind. The moon is bright and the moonlight on the gentle rolling Swells is beautiful. We are approximately 8 miles from San Pedro light ad we can see the lights of Palos Verdes Hills. Fabian in on the 6 to 9 watch. I go on from 12 to 3 A.M. The cook is in the cabin fooling with the radio and practicing code.
