The following is an except of a memoir written by Charles Howard Duffy while sailing on the “LADY JO” in the Honolulu Classic, a yacht race between San Pedro and Honolulu, Jan 15,1939.

We certainly had a terrific time yesterday and last night. We mad 160 miles yesterday using only the squaresail before a brisk east wind. Last night was Hell. The wind was variable in direction but strong. Unless the boat was dead before the wind the squaresail would luff and shook so hard it felt like the whole boat was going to pieces.
